There is a new class action settlement in the works for anyone in Canada that purchased beef after January 1, 2015.
The class action has been brought due to price fixing of beef, much like the recent bread price fixing settlement.
When the settlement is approved and the claims portal opens, you will be able to submit a claim for compensation for your beef purchases between January 1, 2015 and the certification date.
The class includes:
Any Canadian who bought raw beef at a grocery store, butcher, Costco, Walmart, Sobeys, Metro, etc., for home cooking is automatically included.
✅ Who Is Included?
“All persons or entities in Canada who purchased for resale or personal use… the raw portion of cattle carcasses intended for human consumption (‘Beef’)… excluding Beef purchased from the food service industry.”
This means:
Included
Regular consumers buying raw beef at:
Grocery stores (Loblaws, Sobeys, Metro, Costco, Walmart, etc.)
Butcher shops
Any retail store selling raw beef
Purchases for personal use (home cooking, family consumption)
Also included
Businesses that bought raw beef for resale (e.g., butcher shops, small grocers).
Will you need receipts?
Most Canadian consumer class actions do not require receipts for grocery purchases because:
people rarely keep them for years, and
the purchase amounts can be estimated.
We won’t know the exact rules until the Distribution Protocol is published, but based on similar food‑pricing settlements, you’ll likely be able to claim without receipts.
When can you apply?
The settlement document confirms that a Distribution Protocol will be created and approved by the courts to explain exactly how consumers will claim and how payments will be calculated.

🥩 What types of beef qualify?
Any raw beef sold at retail:
ground beef
steaks
roasts
stew beef
ribs
brisket
raw marinated/tenderized beef (allowed under the definition)
Not included:
restaurant meals
fast food
cafeteria food
pre‑cooked beef products
